        Iron is a mineral that body need to produce hemogobin. Hemoglobin is a protein which is function to transport oxygen and axygen will be distibuted throught the body. Lack of hemoglobim can cause anemia or lack of blood. One of the most common anemia is iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is anemia caused by deficiency iron in body and body can’t reserve the iron so formation of hemoglobin reduced. This anemia often found in children, pregnant women and adults and can be serious health problem which can affect to physical, psycological development,and work perfomance. Iron deficiency anemia occur almost in 30% population of the world, in Indonesia iron deficiency anemia estimated occur in 28% adolescent girls. Iron deficiency anemia can be caused by lack of iron intake, chronic bleeding due to ulcer, excessive bleeding during menstruation, and comsumption some drugs. Initial symptoms of iron deficiency anemia same as other anemia. Initial symptom are weak,tired, lethargy, and dizzy eyes. Typical symptom of iron anemia deficiency anemia are koilonychia or spoon nails which nails become brittle, presence of vertical line, and concave like spoon,papillary atropyh of tongue when tongue become slipper and shiny, presence ehite patches at the corners of the mouth or angular stomatitis and dysphagia or painful when swallowing.

        Diagnosis iron deficiency anemia can carried by history or interviews with the patients, physical examination, and laboratory examination. Laboratory examation showed decresed hemoglobin level from mild to severe and decreased erythrocyte index such asMCV and MCH. To confirm the diagnosis of iron deficinecy anemia are serum iron, serum ferritin  erythrocyte protoforphyrin, transferrin receptors and staining of the bone marrow with Prussian blue stain.

        Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia can be done by treating the cause of the anemia and by consuming foods such as eggs, meat and green vegetables. If needed, iron supplements can be given. Iron deficiency anemia rarely requires blood transfusions.
