Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition when blood pressure is at a value of 130/80 mmHg or more. High blood pressure can damage blood vessels and other organs in the body. If left untreated, hypertension can cause serious illnesses or complications, such as: 1. Atherosclerosis (arterial drain, accumulation of fat in blood vessels, rigid blood vessels; 2. Loss of vision, thickening and narrowing of blood vessels in the eye; 3. Aneurysms are formed, blood vessels weaken and dilate; 4. Kidney failure, narrowing of blood vessels in the kidneys, 5 Vascular dementia, disruption of blood flow to the brain, and 6 Heart Failure due to the heart fatigue pumping blood. Some risk factors for hypertension such as: genetic, environmental, hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, renin-angiotensin system, defects in Na excretion and increase in intracellular Na and Ca and factors that increase risk such as obesity, alcohol, smoking and polycythemia. In the measurement of blood pressure can be seen two numbers, namely 1. systolic blood pressure and 2. diastolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart pumps blood throughout the body. While diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart muscle relaxes, before returning to pump blood. In its records, systolic blood pressure is written ahead of diastolic blood pressure, and has a higher number. According to the association of cardiologists in the United States, AHA, in 2017, blood pressure is classified as follows: Normal: under 120/80 mmHg. Increased: ranging from 120-129 for systolic pressure and> 80 mmHg for diastolic pressure. Hypertension level 1: 130/80 mmHg to 139/89 mmHg. Level 2 hypertension: 140/90 or higher. Some herbs that are known to reduce high blood pressure are: Ginger, Cucumber, Garlic, Suledri. Ginger has a dominant spicy taste due to a ketone compound called zingeron. Ginger contains minerals and vitamins including vitamins A, B1, B3, and vitamin C, iron, phosphorus, and calcium. Gingerol in white ginger is believed to help prevent infection. Cucumbers contain potassium and potassium which can reduce high blood pressure. This potassium is an electrolyte that helps regulate the amount of sodium (content in salt) held by the kidneys. In other words, potassium is responsible for controlling one's blood pressure. Garlic has a thick smell has a natural antibiotic effect. Garlic contains: Allicin (allyl 2-propenethiosulfinate or diallyl thiosulfinate); Allyl methyl thiosulfonate1-propenyl allyl thiosulfonate; Y-L-glutamyl-S-alkyl-L-cysteine. The substances contained in garlic work by stimulating the body to produce nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S), thereby reducing blood pressure.
Sweet potato tuber extract controls blood pressure
Figure 1. Comparison of Control and Treatment Systolic Blood Mice
Aroot sweet potato water extract has been shown to reduce blood pressure in rats that are made hypertensive by NaCl induction (Jawi and Sutirta Yasa., 2011).
The provision of purple sweet potato tuber water extract containing anthocyanin is quite high, 13 will increase anthocyanin levels in the blood of mice. Anthocyanin will accumulate into endothelial cells and be able to protect endothelial cells from the influence of free radicals, so it can be used in other studies.
Mahonii Fruit Extract and purple sweet potato tuber extract.
Figure 2. Systolic blood pressure observed for 28 days in water extract, mahagoni ethanol extract and purple sweet potato water extract at a dose of 100 mg.
Mahagoni Fruit Extract and purple sweet potato tuber extract are as good in maintaining blood pressure in the normal range of the influence of NaCl to become hypertensi. Proven in Figure 2. Mice given NaCL on day 13 have shown level 2 hypertension, systolic blood pressure more than 160 mmHG.
Conclusions and recommendations
Some herbs that are known by the public to prevent hypertension are Ginger, Cucumber, Lower white and suledri good for preventing Hypertension. In this study also found purple sweetpotato tubers and mahagoni fruit can also prevent hypertension in studies of NaCl-induced mice. It is recommended for those who have risk factors for hypertension to be diligent in taking the herbs mentioned above.
