Balinese traditional houses, in the tourism area, have
undergone a transformation, where on one hand, people try to maintain the
identity of their traditional houses to attract tourists, but, on the other
hand, they transform their homes to get economic benefits from tourism. This is
a paradox phenomenon. The lack of an appropriate transformation model, which
can be used as a guideline for the community in utilizing homes in tourism
economic activities, infiltrates the tourism function into traditional spatial
and cultural spaces. Therefore this research is urgent to do in an effort to
maintain the potential of traditional houses as tourist attractions that are
cultured and at the same time get economic benefits.
To achieve this goal, a multilevel method is
developed, starting from extracting baseline data that records the texture and
character of traditional house changes. Deeper exploration related to changes
in traditional houses using samples based on stratified random sampling and
interviews that will uncover and create innovations in changing traditional
houses. Followed by the creation of technological innovations on traditional
home change models and ended with an evaluation of the prototype created in the
relevant environment. Finally, an analysis and evaluation were conducted as
well as a focus group discussion on the creation of innovative design changes
in traditional houses as a tourist facility without leaving the meaning and
values of a traditional house.
