We often hear about hernias. Hernia can appear in various places and can occur in newborns to the elderly. What exactly is a hernia? Hernia is defined as a protrusion of internal organs on the surface of the body that occurs due to weakness of the muscle wall or the tissue that covers it. Hernia generally occur in the abdomen, belly button, and groin. About 75% of hernia occur around the groin which is often known as inguinal hernia and the rest varies, incisional hernia due to postoperative 10%, ventral hernia or in the abdominal area 10%, umbilical hernia 3% and other hernia 3%. Inguinal hernia are more common in men than women. Hernia in the abdomen or groin are characterized by the appearance of a lump or protrusion that may disappear when lying down. However, the lump may reappear when standing, laughing, straining or coughing. In infants, umbilical hernia is more common and this lump will appear when the baby is crying.
Some of the risk factors that can trigger a hernia condition like : Often lifting heavy weights continuously such as construction workers or heavy lifting sports, Chronic cough that occurs due to various reasons, such as tuberculosis and smoking. Chronic cough can increase the pressure in the abdominal cavity and can increase the risk of an inguinal hernia, frequent straining due to constipation, Obesity / overweight and age. The incidence of hernias can occur at any age, but most inguinal hernias occur at the age of 45 to 75 years, because in the elderly the smooth muscle wall of the abdomen has weakened, so there is a high chance for hernia to occur. If a hernia has occurred, the treatment is divided into conservative therapy and surgery. In the case of a hernia with minimal symptoms and does not cause activity disturbances, it means that periodic observations can be carried out on an outpatient basis. Conservative therapy is carried out by repositioning the hernia using a bimanual technique and then wearing a buffer (special hernia support pants) to maintain the contents of the repositioned hernia. Hernias should be operated on immediately if accompanied by severe pain, bruising or redness in the herniated area, flatulence, inability to defecate, severe nausea and vomiting and fever. The purpose of hernia surgery is to restore the protruding bowel / internal organs and insert a prolene mesh buffer so that the tissue become strong. If you feel a lump on a part of the body such as a hernia symptom, especially if you have a hernia risk factor, you should immediately consult a doctor.
