The purpose of cesarean section or hysterotomy (hysterotomy) in dogs is to remove the fetus from the uterus as soon as possible. The main indications for performing caesarean section are distokia because the fetus is too large, fetal position error, abnormal fetal growth, small pelvis, or due to weakness of the uterus. Elective caesaria is often planned in brachycephalic races and animals with a history of distokia or due to the occurrence of pelvic bone fractures. Sectio caesaria is more common in small dogs and brachyocephalic breeds.

The animal is prepared as usual for surgery, is anesthetized and laid on its back (dorsal recumbency). Slices are made through the skin and alba linea in the midline ventral region from the xiphoid region (slightly in the cranial umbilicus) to the edge of the pubis. A laparotomy pad or towel is placed over the edge of the incision to isolate the uterus from the abdominal. Both cornua and corpus uteri are carefully pulled out because the cornua uteri and its veins are very easy to tear. Longitudinal incisions are made in the dorsal corpus uteri carefully so as not to injure the fetus. The fetus closest to the incision is pulled out or pushed out by pushing the uterus. The amniotic membrane is opened with fingers or scissors and the puppy is removed. Umbilical cord is clamped with 2 hemostats at a distance of 3 cm from the puppy's stomach and cut. The puppy is submitted for further care the placenta is released from the uterus by slowly being pulled. The other puppies are pushed to the incision site and removed one after the other in the same manner. The uterus incisions are closed with 2-0 or 3-0 chromic catgut with Lembert or Cushing sutures. The peritoneum and alba line are sewn with 2-0 or 3-0 chromic catgut with simple interrupted, continuous subcutaneous and fascia sutures and skin with interrupted stitch patterns. Puppies that have been expelled as soon as possible must be cleaned of fluid in their mouth and nose and body dried. Drying is done by rubbing rather hard to stimulate circulation and respiration. Uterine contractions will occur immediately after the fetus is removed, given oxitosin or ergonovin if uterine contractions do not occur.
