Cooperative business entities are one of the oldest, most
enduring and unique forms of business. Cooperatives are largely ignored in
mainstream economics and management theory. Cooperatives have been placed in
the non-profit and social sector, but were not created for social purposes even
though they have a social purpose function (Mazzarol at all, 2011).
Cooperative as one of the pillars of development, has
been known as the cornerstone of the Indonesian economy and is strengthened by
the provisions in article 33 (paragraph 1) of the 1945 Constitution. In line
with these conditions, the main objective of cooperative development is to
improve the welfare of the community. Learning about cooperatives has started
since early childhood education up to college. However, the development of
cooperative organization performance in Indonesia does not seem to be as bright
as other business sector organizations. This might be caused by the perception
of the people who are not taking sides with the cooperative's ability to provide
the benefits expected by its members.
Creating strong and competitive cooperatives is a shared
responsibility of members, management, managers and employees. So, one measure
of cooperative performance is the level of growth and participation of its members.
Puspayoga (2017) also said that one of the indicators of quality cooperative
performance is the number of its members which always increases every year
(indotimes.co.id, 2017).
The types of cooperatives in Indonesia, if seen from its
membership is quite a lot, and one of them is a student cooperative (Kopma).
Empirical data shows that student participation to become Kopma members is
still very low. A survey also mentions that the millennial generation aged
17-30 years who make up 60 percent of the total population of Indonesia, do not
understand and are not interested in cooperatives (Koperasi & UKM, 2017).
That is, the interest of the community, especially students to become members
of the cooperative, is still considered very low.
College
Student cooperatives (Kopma) are a place for college student entrepreneurial
activities, so a study is needed to understand the low interest of college students
to become Kopma members (Putra et al., 2014). college students as the next
generation of the nation should be able to become pioneers to care about
cooperatives, so that they can be a community mobilizer so that they are
concerned and participate as members of cooperatives (BEM FEB Unud, 2019).
