The
lack of appropriate media tools for teaching deaf children makes it difficult
for teachers to explain the subject matter to students. Furthermore, curriculum
standards are equivalent to those for normal children but do not take into
account the unique needs of deaf children in understanding the content of a
lesson. If normal children can understand all of the material in one semester
with the same weight of material, deaf children take additional effort to
understand it. Explaining a subject to deaf children requires different
delivery methods and media than explaining a subject to hearing children. Word
visualization is required in subjects that require extensive explanation of the
material in the form of pictures, particularly in Mathematics and Science
subjects that require more visual tools. Teachers struggle to explain the
materials in the lesson due to the limitations of teaching aids and the lack of
adequate explanations for pictures. This limitation does not affect teachers
who can draw, but it does affect teachers who cannot draw, so the explanation
is only available in written and verbal (oral) forms. Because deaf children
lack vocabulary in communicating, teacher must be clear and consistent in
delivering teaching materials.
The
E-Learning Information Technology-Based Learning Development Workshop Using
Google Classroom is a series of activities organized by the Udayana Serving
Program (PUM) for teachers at SLB Negeri 2 Sidakarya Denpasar on October 19-20,
2021. This activity was carried out in light of the importance of mastering
E-learning in the Industrial Revolution 4.0, so the emphasis on increasing the
competence of SLB Negeri 2 Sidakarya Denpasar teachers in developing and using
e-learning (Google Classroom) in learning is vital.
The
workshop was attended by 30 teachers from SLB Negeri 2 Sidakarya Denpasar, with
the resource persons being Udayana Serving Program implementers. The material
provided includes how to create a course/class, how to distribute course
material, how to assign class assignments, and how to manage the class
effectively, all of which are RPS-related. The workshop is designed to help teachers
become more innovative in managing more interactive classes.
The
activity results showed that teachers at SLB Negeri 2 Sidakarya Denpasar
improved their classroom management skills, allowing them to be more
innovative. Google Classroom, which refers to RPS, is used by 90% of teachers
to create courses, distribute materials to students, and give
assignments/quizzes.
Several
things could be suggested for future activities at similar schools based on the
results of the activity implementation. Training materials and workshops that
must be emphasized through mentoring activities are related to variations in
the types of online assignments/quizzes given to students, how they are set up,
and how the task/quiz is assessed. It is necessary to provide examples of how
to present online assignments/quizzes, and the assessment is tailored to
students with special needs.
