Bulian Village’s Ritual Language Documentation Research Project
The Bulian Village’s Ritual Language Documentation Research Project aims to document and analyze Bulian Saa, the unique ritual language of Bulian village in northern Bali, which differs significantly from other Balinese ritual languages. Led by I Komang Sumaryana Putra, with members Amrita Nugraheni Saraswaty, I Kadek Surya Jayadi, Aldila Tania Agatha and Luh Made Maitrya Putri, the project focuses on preserving cultural heritage through linguistic analysis, community engagement, and revitalization efforts. Fieldwork involves gathering discourse database, recording rituals, and conducting ethnographic interviews with priests and elders. Using tools like ELAN, the team analyze the discourse of Bulian Saa, while collaborating with local experts to interpret its cultural significance. Findings are disseminated through community workshops, temple gatherings, academic publications, and archiving to ensure accessibility. Scheduled from January 2024 to April 2025, the project seeks to promote cultural awareness among younger generations, contribute to the academic understanding of ritual languages, and strengthen ties between researchers and the Bulian community. One
of the significant outcomes of the project was the organization of an
archaeological talk (first talk), featuring Kristiawan and Ni Ketut Puji Astiti
Laksmi as the main speakers, focused on the significance of preserving Banua
Temple and Dalem Purwa Temple, emphasizing their cultural and historical
importance. This research project, funded by OCSEAN (MSCA-RISE-2019, Project
Number 873207), has facilitated successful collaboration with OCSEAN experts,
including Monika Karmin and Natalia from Tartu University, and George Saad from
Palacky University who joined the second talk about the importance of
preserving this ritual language. The research underscores how this language plays
a key role in maintaining the community's traditions, identity, and spiritual
practices. Both talks and discussions stress the need for collaboration between academics
and the local community to protect these invaluable cultural assets for future
generations.
