Abstrak

Side effects produced by hyperglycemic drugs ( antidiabetic) are currently causing interest in herbal medicines for diabetes to increase. Sembung leaves (Blumea balsamifera L) are one of the traditional medicinal ingredients that contain antioxidant compounds, and are indicated as drugs for diabetes mellitus. thereby preventing the diabeta-gonic action of streptozotocin (Stz).

Streptozotocin(STZ,2-deoxy-2-{3-(methyl-3-nitrosoureido}-D-glucopyranose) is a chemical compound synthesized from Streptomycetes achromogenes, and is used to induce both type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus can be categorized into three types. Type 1 diabetes is a diabetes condition due to insulin deficiency due to the body's inability to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a collection of symptoms that arise due to an increase in blood glucose levels due to insulin deficiency, both absolute and relative. Type 3 diabetes is a condition that often observed during pregnancy.After delivery blood glucose levels return to normal range.

Normal is a term that is known to every living thing that there is no significant difference with the group, although in varying degrees, every living thing that has any differences is usually not taken into account, where the use of the word normal can only be subjective. Subjective of sembung leaves in rabbits using oral glucose loading method stated that compounds in sembung leaves have potential as antidiabetic.
