Abstrak
Background: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a mood disorder characterized by mood swings, changes in thoughts, energy, behaviour, and typically being chronic and severe. Patients experience dramatic mood shifts, going from highly elevated and/or irritable moods to severely lowered moods. These mood changes are accompanied by significant alterations in energy and behaviour. Bisexual refers to an individual who experiences emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attraction to more than one gender.
Case Presentation: A 34-year-old married male, employed in the private sector. It all began with inconsistent parenting patterns. The father allowed whatever happened and didn't provide praise or recognition for the patient's achievements. Meanwhile, the patient's mother was more dominant in parenting, educating the patient in an overprotective and somewhat submissive manner. His mother took on responsibilities while simultaneously doing what should have been the patient's responsibilities. Through a long learning process, a belief gradually formed in the patient's mind that what he had been doing all along was enough to make his parents happy. As a result, an immature personality developed. Bisexuality, in an ego-dystonic form, means that they do not identify as homosexual because they are still capable of marrying someone of the opposite sex, but their true sexual identity remains hidden and is known as the closeted type. Bisexual individuals face a higher risk of discrimination compared to other sexual minority groups due to the risk of HIV transmission. However, this patient is able to control himself to take medication because of his easily fluctuating emotions, which results in behavioral changes to avoid HIV infection.
Conclusion: Like marginalized and discriminated populations, bipolar disorder comorbid with bisexuality is prevalent. One contributing factor to the problem is inconsistent parenting. It is important to emphasize that the role of parents in raising children is crucial to prevent mental health issues.
