He graduated from Bogor Agricultural Institute (Bogor University) in 1987. He hold a master degree in Environmental Management (Griffith University, Australia) in 1994, and a PhD degree in Regional Planning (The University of Queensland, Australia) in 2003.  He was the Head of Research Centre for Culture and Tourism, Udayana University in Bali (2004-2018), and the Executive Secretary of Doctorate Program in Tourism, Udayana University in Bali (2010-2018). Currently, he is currently the Head of Centre of Excellence in Tourism, Udayana University in Bali since 2018.

He is teaching at the Master and Doctorate Program in Tourism, in Agricultural Technology, and in Environmental Sciences at Udayana University. He has undertaken extensive tourism researches in Indonesia, particularly Bali, and given presentation for many tourism workshops and conferences, as well as published some books and journal articles in tourism. His field of interests are environmental management, sustainable development, tourism planning and policy, green tourism certification, and system approach in tourism, environment and agricultural technology.
