I.                 INTRODUCTION

It happens by chance that I was assigned to go to  Malang on 5-7 March 2020 to give socialization and be a guest lecturer about Semantics at   Magister Program-Brawijaya University. We flew by Garuda and as usual I took two Garuda Magazines published in February and March 2020. I read the former during my travelling to Malang and the latter I enjoyed reading it on the way home. The magazines contains a lot of information using the foreign language  which shows the current development of the English itself nowdays. It is good practice if I can share to our beloved students who are studying at the English Department. This is my superb mission to contribute to them in updating their insight   related to some English phenomena happening now.

II.            COVERAGE

Since the magazine is published in terms of promotion, not only for Garuda itself but for Indonesian archipelago as well, it is good for us to choose some promising and crucial themes using appropriate ‘modern’ English. The coverage of this booklet includes : (1) lexical choices,  complex English phrases as well as the Clauses (2) Present Participle and Past  Participle Constructions which are  the most important issues  related to academic, scientific English.

III.       THE FACT AND FINDINGS

The magazine’s title is COLOURS with interesting cover and attracting contents using modern and current  English. From this sentence examples, the readers can widen the insight about Indonesia, global arts, cultures, tourism destinations as well as delicious cuisines. In order to accomodate the idea for updating the readers’ English, the following discussions are divided into several smaller parts:

3.1         To promote Tourism Destinations : Lombok, Melbourne, Palembang,   and Danau Toba

LOMBOK

Lombok is gaining  a reputation as a must-visit paradise island.

But it may sound simple, but I always look forward to eating it, perhap because, unlike Lombok specialisties of Ayam Taliwang ‘a spicy grilled chicken’ or Plecing Kangkung ‘a spicy water spinach’, nasi puyung  is difficult to find in other parts of Indonesia.

There are more flights welcoming more tourists, as a result, the car hire business is also flourishing.

Lombok is developing into an increasingly attractive place  to visit.

One new development causing great excitement is the construction of the MotoGP race circuit in Mandlika

DANAU TOBA

A few tourists could be seen at the sea’s edge, playing in the water, while others preferred to lie relaxing, enjoying the white sand and the calm, blue sea.

The entire island of Sumatera is suffering from a draught and in the distance I see the dry row of hills surrounding  Lake Toba

The golden rays of the morning sun shine  brightly, I see a huge blue lake stretching out before me.

As the dry wind begins to pick up once again, I pull in at Inna Prapat Hotel & Resort, located  at the edge of Lake Toba

We ate a late supper  and the cold highland air begins to penetrate while the wave ripple in  gentle rhythms on the lake and sleep begins to summon.

MELBOURNE

Take the time to explore Melbourne’s diverse ethnic neighbourhoods and your appetite will be very well rewarded.

Australian’s most walkable city  is in the banks of Yarra River.

Melbourne  city is wired 7/24  as a busy place which never sleeps.

Many of the exotic ingredients with which Australians have become familiar were introduced at food markets, kinds of food from overseas are also displayed in every foodstalls. They all Australian, even if they did arrive  from somewhere else.

PALEMBANG

The Musi River region is now designated as a water recreation area that combines cultural, historic, and culinary tourism

Kemaro  is a Palembang word meaning ‘dry’ or ‘arid’, an apt description as the island never flood, even when the river rises

Dozen of raft houses come into view as my boat approaches the HULU District in Palembang
