STUDY ON THE IMPACTS OF SPATIAL ORIENTATION ON THE TRADITIONAL SETTLEMENT AND HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS IN EASTERN PART OF BALI
Funding period : 2018- Active
Abstrak
Spatial orientation is a significant aspect in the layout of traditional settlements and houses in Bali. However, some villages in the eastern part of Bali have spatial orientations that are not generally applicable, are very unique and are local in nature. This unique financial orientation has the potential to create unique and specific variations in the spatial patterns of traditional residential and residential areas in the region. Therefore, it is interesting to explore in more depth and detail the extent to which spatial and spiritual orientation influences spatial conception as well as patterns and spatial arrangements in villages whose orientation system is highly dependent on topographical conditions.
In line with Udayana University's leading research roadmap, one of which is tourism based on local wisdom and the preservation of traditional cultural arts including architectural art and culture, this research aims to explore the variation and character of spatial configuration of several villages in the East Bali region. In this research, it is expected to succeed in exploring the cultural and architectural uniqueness in the region and reconstructing it into a model of local traditional settlements and housing that is not lost so that cultural and architectural diversity in Bali is increasingly recorded and explored. In the future, the cultural and architectural uniqueness in this region can be developed as a tourism potential and a resource for improving people's lives.
Due to the very limited information about the area's effectiveness, this research developed a three-tiered method. The first step is to collect basic data on patterns of settlements and housing as well as basic investigations on variations and texture of existing conditions of traditional houses. This stage is the fundamental foundation of the second step in the framework of investigating and exploring traditional house layout related to the physical structure of settlements consisting of spatial systems, physical systems and stylistic systems. The next step is to explore the relationship between the tradition of spatial and spiritual orientation with socio-cultural activities and architectural practices through interviews and architectural documentation (such as maps, layouts, views and photos). In this study, architectural documentation was developed and used at each stage as an important component. This architectural documentation is not only an additional component, but also as a way to trace the relationship of spatial stories and architectural narratives to the spatial activities of their inhabitants.
The results of this study are the identification of the local character of the spatial configuration of settlements and housing in the eastern part of Bali and its relation to spatial orientation. These results are in the form of local architectural models that are expected to contribute to theories and concepts in local architecture in Bali. This result can be an effort to inventory and texture of architectural practices in Bali related to an integrated and close relationship between spatial configuration, culture, and customs. This local spatial configuration can be used as a basis for reference and in carrying out development that has a unique regional character. These results will be disseminated at international seminars and at the International Journal of Sustainable Development.
