Transformation of Traditional Balinese House in Tourism Villages

Bali is a major tourist destination in Indonesia that relies on its culture, which includes socio-cultural activities and the architectural form of the traditional Balinese house, as capital to attract tourists (Prameswari 2005, Ardika 2007). An increase in the number of tourists stimulates people to transform their traditional houses for tourist facilities. These constructions have changed the setting, spaces and forms of the traditional house where the Balinese, based on tri hita karana philosophy, perform domestic and socio-cultural activities representing the traditional lifestyle of the Balinese. This phenomenon gives rise to a question about the continuity of these activities in the new settings. By examining the setting, forms and transformation process of the traditional Balinese house and interviewing the occupants related to their socio-cultural activities in their house, the paper discusses the continuity of traditional activities within the new setting that has been transformed for tourist facilities.
