ABSTRACT The purpose of research is to identify the profile of surface and functional groups biodegradable plastics made from cassava modified starch. Research conducted by exploration method, which starts from the manufacture biodegradable plastics of cassava starch modified and continued by observing the surface profile of biodegradable plastics of cassava starch modified on the side of the transverse and longitudinal using Scan Electron Microscope (SEM), and to identify the functional groups on the polymer formed in biodegradable plastics using a spectrometer FTIR. The results of a study showed that the surface profile of biodegradable plastics on the looks longitudinal shows the gel networks formed by modified starch polymer material with cavities in the air. Biodegradable plastics profile of starch cassava (tapioca) appear alongside or crosswise displays the order of layered vertical direction with a thickness of 379 microns, while the magnification 2500 times looked crosswise show tissues gel formed by the polymer material starch is structured in the form of waves or wave in the vertical direction. Biodegradable plastics are formed of polymer starch modified to contain functional groups hydroxyl (OH) bonded to hydrogen, alkanes (CH), aldehyde (CH), hydrogen bonding carboxylic acid, alkyne (C = C), esters, aromatics simple, carboxyl (CO ), alkenes (C = C) and hydrocarbons - (CH2) n. Keywords: biodegradable plastics, cassava modified starch, surface profile and functional groups.
