Two cases of oral amphetamine intoxication

Abstrak
Objective: To compare two cases of oral amphetamine intoxication and the differing complications Case Report: Two cases who presented to the emergency room with a decrease in consciousness. Both cases were young and oral amphetamine intoxication was diagnosed based on anamnesis, physical examination, and urine drug screening [1]. In case 1 the onset was 4 h after an unknown dosage of amphetamine mixed with alcohol. In case 2, the onset was 7 h after a small dosage and mixed with soda. Both cases developed hyperthermia, but more severe complications were noted for case 1 including seizure, rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure, hepatotoxicity, gastrointestinal bleeding, and hypoglycemia [2]. Despite supportive management for 2 weeks, case 1 died due to multi organ failure, but case 2 survived and was discharged from hospital after 24 h. Conclusion: The dosage of oral amphetamine which causes severe intoxication is still unclear [3]. The effect of mixing alcohol with amphetamine is more danger due to increase stimulating effect. There is variability in the clinical presentation which requires early diagnosis and emergency supportive therapy for successful management and to avoid fatal complications.
