Understanding Legal English

Legal English is the style of English used by lawyers and other legal professionals. By comparing Legal English to Standard International English or commonly also called General English, we can understand that there are a number of differences between Legal English and General English. First, some words in General English have different meanings when used in a legal context, such as the word “consideration” in General English means thinking about others. Otherwise, when used with regard to Legal English such as “contract”, this word refers to the thing of value that passes between people in exchange for something. Second, there some words only used for Legal English such as “tort and “restrictive covenant,” those words would not be understood in everyday life without legal training.
