Globalization is
an age that increases the risk of complaints in the musculoskeletal system as
the main mechanism mechanical in the
human body that often caused by working posture or biomechanical of the workers
body without obeying safety and
ergonomic standards principles. The basic principles of the safety on workers
are often as aspect which is deliberately neglected by business owners who are
hampered by the lack of information and trimming the cost of the health budget
in order to get the company huge profit as possible. The advantage that a
company receives without obeying to the safety and ergonomic standards of its employees
or workers is basically a time bomb which at a certain time will cause more
huge complaints to the worker's body thereby reducing company efficiency and
income.
One of the most
common complaints related to work musculoskeletal disorders (WMDs) in workers
of a company is low back pain. Low back pain is a pathological condition where
pain is in the area around the waist / lumbopelvic so that changes posture due
to body compensation, increased pain when active motion until when its become
worst also produced referred pain in certain conditions. Usually the
calculation of work musculoskeletal disorders (WMDs) themselves can be assessed
from the greater risk of complaints occurring in the body by using body mapping
(Nordic Body Map) combined with measurement of REBA and RULA scores. High
scores that obtained from the final REBA and RULA measurements indicate the
high risk and more importance of modification / adjustment of the work station
or posture of the worker's body. The low back pain incident itself is most
commonly suffered by workers carrying out heavy lifting and repetitive heavy
lifting activities. Adjustments for the modification of the work station can be
in the form by using lift assistive device (work assistive device) so that the
worker no longer has moving awkward like bending the trunk very much and
reduce compensation to the muscles of the lumbar stabilizer and
mobilizer. Physiotherapy interventions can be given by strengthening these core
muscles themselves so that there is an increase in protection from compensation
for poor work postures. Exercise can be one of the minimum alternative
solutions to companies that cannot afford to provide lifting equipment.
Strengthening exercises of the core muscles have not been able to optimally replace
assistive device, but minimal its will be efficient to reduce the risk factors
for low back pain and complaints for the worker's own body.
Besides being
caused by lifting postures of workers, with prolonged sitting activities also
have a significant risk of low back pain, adjustment chairs that are designed
to be adjusted according to anthropometry will greatly play a role as a
modification of the station and work posture. The results of the study show
that a combination of core training and ergonomic modification can reduce the
risk of low back pain by up to 70 percent due to work. Prolonged sitting
activities such as typing in front of a computer for more than 6 hours will
increase the risk of low back pain due to eccentric muscle contractions, reducing
the flexibility of the lumbar stabilizer and mobilizer. The existence of
activation of muscle contractions that last for a long time cause adaptive
response from muscles to become more tightness.
Some companies
which currently have already applied aspects of employee safety principles and ergonomics in the accumulative
time are able to show a consistent growth rate of production each year.
Knowledge of safety working posture and ergonomics on work system is basically
a habit of training and long-term investment for companies that have positive
value. It does require a significant amount of cost to make adjustments from
work stations and health promotion, but the results obtained are even greater.
