Since COVID-19 has spread throughout the world, people are urged to stay at home and reduce travel activities. All activities are encouraged to be carried out at home to prevent the spread of the virus from getting wider. Studying and working from home have become familiar now. All activities are made online or virtual using electronic devices.
Working or studying online for long periods of time and in an non-ergonomic sitting position can result in injury to the lower back which is often referred to as low back pain (LBP). LBP is pain that is felt in the lower back where there is stress on the back which affects the components of the muscles and surrounding tissues in the spine and pelvis area due to excessive use.
Data obtained from the Sanglah Central General Hospital in 2010 stated that the number of LBP patients undergoing outpatient treatment was 249 patients and caused about 11%-12% of patients to experience disability and have a tendency to relapse around 26%-37%. LBP that is not handled properly will not only have an impact on health, but also on work and productivity so that it affects a person's economy and the environment.
How to deal with the occurrence of LBP due to lack of mobility during this pandemic? Based on research conducted by Kanas et al in 2018, for 8 weeks, a home exercise program with a manual has an effect on overcoming pain levels, functional capacity and quality of life, in non-specific LBP patients. In addition, based on research conducted by Yuni in 2018, stretching muscles in between work can be useful in preventing the occurrence of LBP. As for various examples of stretching movements can be seen on the internet, then adjust the movement to the tool and position you work in. Side stretch, chair cat and cow, and seated twist are some of the exercises which are good for back muscle after prolong seating.
Besides, the call to always stay at home is not a reason to be passive. Take at least 10-15 minutes per day to do light exercise such as yoga or stretching in an effort to stay active and maintain health. However, if the pain due to LBP is very disturbing and unbearable, then immediately go to the nearest health facility or physiotherapy for treatment.
