The City space
in Indonesia is still generally left with complex issues related to
meaningful city space. The arrangement of a city space which means it is
appropriate to include a solution such as starting to glance and focusing on social
issues as a key in design process. The city has always suffered the significant
changes and ultimately always leads to a mutual agreement on how preferably the
city is laid out.
There are many examples of public phenomena which has been occur in the city space, especially in Indonesia. As one of the fundamental issues such as the furnitures on a city park, it could be the park bench reserved for citizen, on the other hand, can be a very convenient place for the homeless at night. It would be difficult to imagine when the facility was intended to be used with other civilians, so that the city space could not provide optimal benefits for its residents with a variety of lifestyles, perspectives and attitudes. It looks fitting , the urban designers accommodate the differenciates of design requirements, so that the city space which was created can provide the optimal meaning and benefits without the sense of alignments. In realizing this, our starting point focuses on pursuing a design of a city space which is able to raise the civilization of ethics and morality and the lifestyle of its users. One way can start from applying an approach to critical regionalism theories in creating a city space of meaning, and can be enjoyed jointly. The approach consists of several sub items including: Sense of place, sense of nature, sense of history, sense of craft, and sense of limit. We start from the first of a sense of place approach. This approach explains that the city's weighty point of design is in the context of "genius loci". As an example of the design of material selection which is resistant to local weather, the placement and selection of local vegetation and traditions that are appropriate, will be create the opportunities for good social interaction activities in the city space. The second approach is the sense of nature approach, the main focus lies in how the designer can incorporate the design elements inspired by the nature of the values. Nature gives a perfection through its system which is always balanced and harmonious, when applied to a design of the city space that is expected to create a dynamic balance which synergizes well, the balance in question can give the same opportunity for the social economic community's class which have each differenciates of rights and needs of the social economy community's which will complement and not to dominate each other. The third approach is the sense of history approach, this approach focuses on the history or it's origins of the city formation, which is the most important and not to be forgotten. The historical part is the process of natural record which has been held within a certain period of positive and negative meaning, it can make a city space become more meaningful with a clearer identity and a prestige. The historical values of a city have the usefulness of the events recorded in the collective memory of the townspeople as well as implied on the city's artifacts, this can be a valuable lesson in the future development of the town design. The fourth approach is a sense of craft which means the city space is manifested not like creating an object through a rigid, homogeneous manufacturing process, which does not care at the location where the city design is laid. This approach is certainly different from a craft or hand work made through an art process that further accentuates the harmonious and friendly nature of the environment, it has a very high artistic features and derived from the taste, thought, and the cultivation of the designer. The city space created by the consideration of the sense of craft which is believed to give a lot of positive significance in the activities of the City space , it is because of art that a human work process can not separated from the element of social quality while manufacturing is in a process of work which is only oriented to its quantity. The latter is a sense of limit approach. Urban planners ain’t allowed to roar anything other than engineering factors in their design results, for that reason,it are not all problems and issues in the city space can be solved by design solutions which are only oriented to the dominance of technical sciences, but the urban issues are also triggered by the dominance of social issues. Although the limit approach here has a primary focus on anthropometri and ergonomics on the human scale, but should still incorporate the social element (behavior) in its application. This is solely because the field of engineering is not complete without adequate collaboration from social sciences when aimed at the welfare of the city's living room for human beings, considering that human beings are not engineering products but are social beings.
