Recently, the number of beach waste in several tourist
destinations in Bali Province, Indonesia, specifically: Sanur, Padanggalak,
Kuta, and other beaches are increasing and can cause environmental pollution
that damages the ecosystem. These problems must be immediately addressed more
seriously, comprehensively, and sustainably so do not impact the environmental
negatively as many tourists and residents who live near the beach. One
developing innovation that could be tackled the problems is to reuse the unused
material into high economic value building material products. This idea can be
put forward as the main step to reduce beach waste and at the same time to
process it into building materials that are environmentally friendly,
economical, and it can create new jobs based on democratic economy.
The
advantages of making building materials made from waste especially beach waste into building
materials that have more economic
value, competitive price, light weight, easy and fast to install, meet the strength standard. Furthermore, its mold size can be made as needed and the printing process does not need
combustion in compare of common wall filling material which is reduced air and water pollution.
The benefit gained through the
innovation is that the
building
material is produced to meet the needs on a regular basis for the middle to
lower income people, primarily to support building material delivery for communities affected by natural disasters as has happened in several regions
in Indonesia. Moreover,
this innovative building material can support
government programs because it can be implemented for delivering temporary shelters (so called huntara or hunian sementara) and permanent residences as well (so called huntap or hunian tetap) for refugees in the affected areas.
Innovation
specifications involve affordable technology and materials which are easily
carried out by the community in the field (relatively similar to the brick
molding process), but are still constrained in the process of making wood
particles from beach waste. The innovation development plan for the technological
direct toward product downstream which is to overcome waste at the beach so
that the remains clean, healthy, comfortable, free from the waste interference.
Beach waste are collected from NGOs which usually involved as the beach
cleaners community, hence, the activity can be carried out sustainably. Firstly,
planning in a production cycle is to form a working group or community of wood
waste collectors on the beach. Then, to transporting the wood waste to the
workshop, then processes wood into particles. Next step to print it with the
required size and materials composition that have been determined from the
results of previous studies. Finally, to obtain material that is economical, have
competitive prices, durable, strong, easy to produce, and can be installed
briefly in the field.
