Motorcyclist's Intention toward Traffic Violations and Speeding

A motorcycle is considered as an unsafe mode of transportation. This is indicated by the increased percentage of fatalities related to accidents involving motorbikes. Motorcycle accidents accounted for more than 70% of the total accidents in Bali. In addition, the potential for victims associated with certain traffic accidents is higher for motorcycle riders, mainly due to the lack of protection provided by the integrity of the motorcycle structure. To reduce fatal motorcycle accidents, the handling pattern of motorcycle riders must be different from other road users.

Meanwhile, human behavior factors significantly affect motorcycle accidents in Indonesia, including in Bali. This human factor is generally reflected in the behavior of motorcycle riders including traffic violations and speeding. Motorcycle riders also demonstrate risky perceptions and behavior such as using a cellphone while driving on the road.

Meanwhile, traffic violations are intentional activities, which are the result of social and motivational factors and are one of the behaviors of road users that is different from a standard system that can increase the risk of traffic accidents. Violations of traffic rules and speeding are considered a type of risky motorbike behavior. In addition, motorcycle riders who tend to ride at high speeds and need the appreciation of others for their behavior are more likely to be risky behaviors.

The actual behavior of motorcycle riders on the road, can be predicted by analyzing their intentions. This study aims to examine the contributing factors related to the intention of motorcyclists who have the potential to commit violations and speeding. It aims to build a better understanding of the components that influence driving behavior on the road. Therefore, this study specifically combines the characteristics of motorcycle riders in terms of sex, age, education level, ownership of a driver's license, distance traveled, rider perceptions related to motorcycle riding, driving behavior for the next 12 months. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was arranged to test the causal relationship between motorcycle rider characteristics, perceptions and intentions.

This study concludes that there are two components consisting of sensation seeking and attitudes towards risk behaviors that will significantly affect motorcyclists' intentions of violations and traffic speed. Sensation seeking shows that motorbike riders in Bali are more likely to commit traffic violations and speed while riding on the road as long as they consider they are able to control such a behavior.

Regarding gender, male motorcyclists compared to women are more likely to be involved in sensation seeking. Meanwhile, the age of motorcyclists shows that younger motorcyclists compared to older ones tend to be involved in traffic violations. Traffic safety education and law enforcement initiatives are suggested to reduce traffic violations especially for male and young motorbike riders. In addition, further studies are needed to systematically examine the effects of various strategies to reduce past violations by motorcyclists in Bali.
