Demodicosis
in dogs is a disease that is quite difficult to treat. To cure demodicosis
requires a long time and intensive treatment that often frustrates dog owners.
Until recently, the most commonly used treatment for demodicosis in many
countries is using amitraz or a combination of imidacloprid and moxidectin. The
drugs available for the treatment of demodicosis such as amitraz, ivermectin,
milbemycin oxime, and moxidectin are generally given several times for a period
of three months or more. To be effective, the treatment requires the owner's
compliance with the medication. If a dog owner stops treatment prematurely,
this is the cause of treatment failure.
Conventional
medicine often appears to be working, but it relies heavily on highly toxic
treatment methods. The use of natural remedies for treating demodicosis can
boost the dog's immune system so that the body itself can fight the causes of
the disease.
Isoxazoline
is a new class of antiectoparasites. Included in this group are sarolaner and
fluralaner. The advantages of using drugs classified as isoxazoline are that
they are very easy to use and they can reach the entire body. The use of
fluralaner in a single dose given orally is very effective for the treatment of
generalized demodicosis in dogs. After a single oral dose of fluralaner is very
easily absorbed so that the volume distributed throughout the body is
relatively high. Fluralaner also has a long elimination time so that its
activity in the dog can last a long time. The use of fluralaner in dogs is very
safe, even use at doses five times the recommended therapeutic dose is also
proven safe. In addition, fluralaner is also safe for use in pregnant and
lactating animals.
The efficacy of fluralaner for treating demodicosis
was reported by Erawan et al. (2019).
Treatment with fluralaner in dogs suffering from demodicosis has shown success.
At week 5 after being treated, the case's skin had no lesions at all, the hair
grew well, the hair looked healthy and thick.
