Tourism trends continue to develop following the development of technology where information spreads easily and quickly so that volunteer tourism emerges as a form of development of tourism trends. The development of volunteerism in the world can be seen from the organization of volunteer travel program providers and the making of Bali, which is an icon of Indonesian tourism, becoming one of the voluntary destinations.

The existence of this phenomenon and world trends bring change and cause the emergence of new innovations in developing types of tourism activities. Various kinds of terms related to tourism continue to grow along with the development of world tourism. No wonder in the world of tourism the term voluntarism appears

The APEC Tourism Working Group report 2018 lists organizations relating to volunteers in the APEC region including Indonesia. Based on these data Indonesia has about 36 voluntary organizations including sending, receiving and liaising organizations. Famous liaison organizations are Go Overseas and Go Abroad. This organization collects and promotes various volunteer experiences provided by various organizations in various countries.

The various measures imposed for this volunteer program are determined by organizations with diverse and different price ranges. Programs that are free of charge are programs that may have received separate funding or funded by the company. However, usually the costs charged to volunteer tourists are used for their own needs such as accommodation for accommodation, transportation during activities, food and costs incurred for tourism activities available in the program. In addition, the costs incurred are mostly contributed to fund the costs of programs that support the communities or places visited.

Many factors affect the decision of tourists to choose volunteer tourism packages, including psychological, situational, and social factors. With the knowledge of these factors can be used as a reference in the development of voluntary packages offered by non-profit organizations and companies. Through the development of a good voluntary package it can have a positive impact on the destinations visited and the community and on the tourists themselves. This will affect the development of tourism into responsible tourism.

Bali as an icon of Indonesian tourism visited by tourists from various countries is also a place where volunteerism develops. The development of technology and the internet makes sources of information more quickly spread and easily accessible. There are so many organizations and choice of volunteer programs that tourists can choose through information dissemination on the internet. These foundations and organizations open opportunities for tourists who want to do volunteer activities to get involved and participate directly.

The characteristics of the majority of tourists in volunteerism in Bali, can be seen in a trip descriptor or description of the trip, namely that their purpose of coming to Bali is to vacation while volunteering, they arrange their own trips with a minimum stay of 1 month, and average expenditure the average per day excluding donations for the foundation is IDR 201,000 to IDR 400,000. In tourist descriptors or a description of tourists, it is known that the tourists who dominate are female tourists from the United Kingdom with ages 15-24 years. From the two descriptions, the majority of volunteer tourists who come to Bali are classified as volunteer tourists with the type of discoverers, educators, and learners, befrienders, and investors. The motivation of tourists in voluntourism is divided into intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsically, the motivation of the majority of volunteer tourists is their desire to fulfill a dream, personal growth, and professional development. Extrinsically, the motivation of the majority of volunteer tourists is due to the opportunity to carry out travel / adventure activities, cultural exchange / learning, and broadening horizons (Mahadewi, 2016)

The motivation of all the volunteer tourists who visit Bali intrinsically is because of the desire to fill their free time with activities that benefit themselves and others in need, namely to fulfill a dream, personal growth, and professional development. Extrinsically, or originating from outside the individual is due to the opportunity in the voluntary destination area to carry out challenging and unique activities or travel / adventure activities, activities that are able to bring learning and cultural and language exchange with local residents, namely cultural exchange / learning , and opportunities for broadening horizon, namely breaking down the outside world to broaden horizons and friendship boundaries that exist between these individuals and the outside world to broaden horizons and friendships (Irena Hersi, 2015)
