Natural compounds are the result of the metabolism of a living organism (plants, animals, cells) in the form of primary and secondary metabolites. Natural material is the science that deals with chemical compounds contained in natural materials from plants or animals.
Chemical research on natural materials has long been done. . The secondary metabolite compounds which have been successfully isolated, by humans are further utilized as a medicinal ingredient such as a drug for high blood pressure and as a cancer drug. One of the uses of natural materials currently being explored is the use of natural ingredients as antioxidants. Antioxidants are the main defense to fight the damage caused by free radicals and are needed to optimize the maintenance of health. Consuming more antioxidants helps the body to neutralize harmful free radicals. Antioxidants play a role in neutralizing free radicals by transferring electrons to make it stable. The most studied sources of antioxidants are beta carotene (pro vitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin E, phenolic acids, selenium, chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids, glutathione, coenzyme Q10, melatonin, and lycopene.
The increasing prevalence of degenerative diseases in Indonesia motivates Indonesian food and nutrition researchers to explore antioxidant compounds derived from natural sources. Regarding free radicals related to disease, it would be more appropriate if antioxidants were defined as compounds that protect cells from the harmful effects of reactive oxygen free radicals. Antioxidants have the ability to trap free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive and oxygen is present in biological systems from various sources. Free radicals can oxidize nucleic acids, proteins, lipids or DNA and can start degenerative diseases. Antioxidant compounds such as phenolics, polyphenols and free radical acid flavonoids such as peroxides, or peroxyl lipid hydroperoxides and thus inhibit oxidative mechanisms that result in degenerative diseases.
Based on the study data of the Task Force Expert Team for the Acceleration of National Coordination Handling, there are 4 types of comorbidities that are most susceptible to corona infection, namely hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. The four diseases are degenerative diseases caused by free radicals. Free radicals are by-products of processing food into energy. In addition we can also get free radicals from food, air, even from our body's reaction to sunlight. Our body has a special defense mechanism to counteract the bad effects of free radicals, namely antioxidants. Sources of free radicals from outside the body that can be found everyday, such as cigarette smoke, vehicle smoke, and contaminated food. To increase the body's resistance due to free radicals it is necessary to consume foods that contain antioxidants. Sources of free radicals from outside the body that can be found everyday, such as cigarette smoke, vehicle smoke, and food contaminated with pesticides. Free radicals risk damaging cells in the body and triggering serious diseases. Eating foods rich in antioxidants can reduce the risk of damage. Free radicals that form in the body are chemicals that are produced from the digestive process of food. While free radicals from outside the body are caused by cigarette smoke and radiation. Free radicals that the body cannot handle can trigger various chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. In big cities during this pandemic when pollution levels were higher, we increasingly needed antioxidants, especially if we live in environments with higher pollution levels. The body's oxidative load in such environments is much higher than in places with low pollution levels. The body cannot produce antioxidants naturally as needed. Therefore it is necessary
consume enough foods with high antioxidant content every day, to combat free radicals.

There are various types of antioxidants. Each type of antioxidant works in a different way, to protect body cells from damage. Vitamin C is known to prevent it
damage by capturing and neutralizing free radicals, while vitamin E can break the free radical chain. Flavonoids are antioxidants found in various
type of food and is the biggest part of antioxidants.
Some vegetables and fruits contain higher antioxidants than others. Examples of antioxidants used by the body are vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene. All three are contained in fruits and vegetables that are red, orange, yellow, and purple. Some foods as the main source of antioxidants include:
• Fruits: apples, pears, grapes, oranges, bananas, mangoes,
pineapple, papaya, st
