BALI MYNA IN NUSA PENIDA ISLAND

Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi Stresseman, 1912) was first discovered by Erwin Stresemann in 1911 in Bubunan Village, Seririt District, Buleleng Regency, Bali Province. However, birds in the 1950s were no longer seen in Bubunan Buleleng. Meanwhile in the 1960s Bali Myna was still in Selemadeg Tabanan, in the 1980s in Melaya Jembrana, and in the 1990s the bird was still found in Pupuan Tabanan. In the 2000s it was only in Pos Brumbun to Pos Merah Bali Barat National Park (BBNP).

Since 2006 the Bali Myna conservation effort has been carried out by the FNPF (Friends of the National Parks Foundation), on Nusa Penida Island in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Bali and Udayana University. FNPF has conducted studies since 2004, namely an inventory of vegetation producing Bali Myna feeding, and socialization to the community. Dissemination to the people of Nusa Penida Island regarding the release and protection of Bali Myna. In addition, FNPF collaborated with Indigenous Institutions at the Nusa Penida District, Klungkung Regency, and Bali Province. The aim is to include bird protection, especially the Bali Myna, in awig-awig (customary law) tradisional village on Nusa Penida Island, Nusa Lembongan Island and Nusa Ceningan Island.

On the island of Nusa Penida Bali Myna is released from Penataran Ped Temple, so that residents consider it to belong to the temple. During 2006-2014, 65 birds were released. The existence of Bali Myna in 2015 is found in Banjar Bodong, Penataran Ped Temple, Dalem Bungkut Temple, Puseh Ped Temple, Tinggar Temple, Banjar Sental Kawan, Banjar Biaung, Banjar Sebunibus, Banjar Sental Kangin, Banjar Penida, Bukit Klibun Ped, Banjar Sakti, Lembongan and Puaji Temple, Nusa Lembongan Island. Bali Myna population on Nusa Penida Island from 2006-2015 fluctuated from 19 to 84 birds, the most population in 2009 was 84 birds. In January 2015 there were 66 Bali Myna populations in the Nusa Penida Islands. While the population of Bali Myna in BBNP in 2019 is 256 birds. Bali Myna on Nusa Penida Island reproduce three times a year, namely in January, June and October, while in TNBB only once, namely in December-January. Because on the island of Nusa Penida more feeding, such as insects, fruits and nectar.

Conservation of the Bali Myna on Nusa Penida Island can be successful because the traditional village has awig-awig. So there is no poacher of these birds on Nusa Penida Island
