practicing yoga help us to maintain our immune system? Practicing yoga can
reduce stress hormones so that it can boost the immune system. Practicing yoga
can reduce stress hormones because yoga combines various physical postures
(asanas) with meditation and breathing regulation (pranayama) so that it can
provide a relaxing effect. In addition, various yoga postures can increase the
blood and lymph flow so it optimize detoxification and function of all organs
in our body.
Various studies have proven
that yoga training give positive effect on the immune system. Regular yoga has
been proven to prevent the occurrence of immune dysfunction that occurs in
stressful conditions. Immune dysfunction facilitate infections including viral
infections. The human body has a mechanism to fight viral infections through
the formation of antibodies (humoral immunity) and immunity mediated by immune
cells (cell-mediated immunity). Scientific data based on various studies have
proven yoga training by combining physical posture (asanas), breathing
regulation (pranayama) and meditation optimize the humoral immunity function through
the formation of immunoglobulin A, M, and G (Ig A, IgM, and Ig G). These three
types of immunoglobulins have anti-viral functions. Ig G is an antibody that
neutralizes the virus in the serum while Ig A is the more dominant antibody
that plays role when the virus infects the mucosal surface. Yoga has also been
proven to optimize the function of cell-mediated immunity where there is a
significant improvement in the percentage of natural killer cells (NK cells).
NK cells also play a role in fighting viral infections.
