We as humans who live on this earth communicate by using symbols. Humans organize and interpret the reality that they face with symbols, and reconstruct that reality with symbols as well (Raymond Firth, 1973). To understand symbols and their meanings at the public level in depth and holistically, it can use deep descriptive methods (Clifford Geertz, 1992). In this context, the use of a symbolic approach in an effort to understand some of the symbols and their meanings at the public level is an identity inherent in the Balinese, including accent, name, benang tridatu (tridatu yarn), raditional clothing, and the building of worship in the home yard.

Balinese in verbally communicate using language media, both local languages and Indonesian. When communicating with outsiders who are not Balinese, they often guess their identity (Balinese). This is caused when chatting with people outside Bali using Indonesian, when saying the letters t and f, he heard less than perfect. Likewise, Balinese accent has characteristics that are widely known by people outside Bali. When a Balinese person is outside Bali, it is often guessed by someone who is his interlocutor. In fact, often when speaking a few fragments, the interlocutor has guessed that the person who was spoken to was Balinese. Why people outside Bali are easy to guess that those who are invited to communicate are Balinese, in this case there are several reasons, including (1) having Balinese friends; (2) had lived in Bali; (3) his relatives married a Balinese; (4) had a Balinese girlfriend; (5) Balinese coworkers; (6) thanks to watching soap operas with Balinese roles; (7) Balinese married / married.

The distinctive identifying symbol attached to the structured Balinese, that is, the first names as a sign of the birth number and the title of the nation. Structurally, the name attached to the Balinese based on their birth order number has a four-class structure, consisting of (1) number one child, there are three names of choice: Wayan, Gede, Putu; (2) child number two, there are also three choices: Made, Kadek, Nengah; (3) child number three there are only two choices, namely Nyoman, Komang, and (4) child number four, there is only one choice Ketut.

In the context of naming the Balinese, also revealing the name of its nationality inherited through patrilineal lineage. Structurally, the house of chess is in the form of four classifications consisting of catur wangsa (four dynasti) of society, namely (1) the wangsa brahmana (brahmana dynasti) ; (2) the wangsa ksatrya (ksatrya dynasti), (3) the wangsa wesya (wesya dynasti); and (4) the wangsa sudra/jaba  (sudra/jaba dynasty). The wangsa (dynasty) system sequence number 1,2,3 is called the tri wangsa , while the wangsa sudra/jaba, is called jaba. Wangsa jaba (jaba dynasti)  is dominating the population of the island of Bali, which is 85 percent (Bagus, 1979). Among the tri wangsa have their respective titles, but behind the title there is also accompanied by a name that matches the serial number of his birth, then only his real name. For example, Ida Bagus Putu Suryatama, Ida Ayu Made Priantini, Cokorda Gde Agung; Anak Agung Made Atmika, Anak Agung Ayu Ketut Samiati. Meanwhile, among the jaba dynasty, before the name of the birth number, the name in front of it is normal, that is, there is I to indicate male gender and Ni for female names, so for example for men there is named I Putu Samyarata (male) and Ni Putu Adriyanti (female).

The Balinese also inherit traditional clothes that have special characteristics and contain certain meanings. The traditional clothes inherited by Balinese ancestors have several types. For example there are great traditional clothing, lightweight custom. In general, traditional clothing that is recognized by outsiders when the Balinese are outside the area of Bali, for example, among men using cloth / kamben, kampuh and destar or udeng equipped with flowers. On the women's side, their traditional clothes, namely kebaya, shawl, kamen / cloth. Scarves are usually used by tying at his waist, and his hair combed neatly decorated with flowers. In this decade, more and more Balinese are using benang tridatu (tridatu thread) that is coiled around their right wrist. Tridatu yarn consisting of three strands wrapped in such a way, this thread is actually a symbol of worship of the Sang Hyang Tri Murti, namely Dewa Brahma, Dewa Vishnu, and Dewa Shiva. The Balinese who live outside the island of Bali are easily recognized by outsiders because in their yard there are a number of shrines called pemerajan or sanggah, usually located in the northeast or at the edge of the road. In addition, in the middle of his yard stood a place of worship called sanggah natah or sanggah surya. On certain days, in the building where the worship was placed offerings as a means of offering to the manifestations of God.
