New type of
diseases that has never been identified has become pandemic in almost all parts
of the world. This disease is called Corona virus Diseases 2019 (COVID-19). The
spread of this disease is so devastating that on January 30, 2020 WHO
established it as the health emergency of a distressing community.
Indonesia
reported COVID-19 confirmation cases of 2 people on March 2, 2020 and now there
are approximately 60 thousands reported. The impact of the COVID-19 Virus
pandemic in Indonesia was experienced by the entire community. Kompas on March
28, 2020 reported the impact of this pandemic virus in various fields such as
tourism, social, economy and education. On March 18, 2020 the government issued
a Circular Letter to temporarily suspend all activities inside and outside the
room in all sectors to suppress the spread of the Corona virus, especially in
the field of education.
Circular number 4, 2020 was issued on March 24, 2020 to carry out the learning process at home through online learning. The closure of schools as a government policy to suppress the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly had a large impact on the world of education in Indonesia, especially the education of children in Denpasar city. By interviewing six informants (teachers, students, and parents) living in Denpasar about the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic in elementary schools, information was obtained on the description of the impact and constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic on students, teachers, and parents including costs and Change habits like the following:
The Impact on students.
Students feel
forced to attend distance learning without adequate facilities and infrastructure
at home. The next obstacle is students do not have a culture of distance
learning because so far the learning system is implemented through face to
face. The sudden closure of the school and in such a long time made students
lose the opportunity to socialize with each other. They are used to being in
school to interact with their friends, play and have fun with their friends and
face to face with their teacher. The next impact experienced by students is
that school closures are too long, making them bored.
The impact on parents.
The obstacle
faced by parents is the increased cost of purchasing internet quota, online
technology requires a network connection to the internet and quota so that the
level of internet quota usage will increase and will increase the burden on
parents spending. To do online learning for several months, of course more
quota will be needed and will automatically increase the cost of purchasing
internet quota. The closure of the school also adds to the burden of parents who
also work from home, because besides doing their own work, they must accompany
their children in completing their schoolwork. Even though the existence of a
work from home system provides an opportunity for parents to get closer to
their children, because they have to stay at home.
The impact on teachers.
Not all
teachers are able to use internet technology or social media as a learning
tool, many senior teachers are not yet able to use facilities to support online
learning activities and require assistance and training.
Teacher
competence in using technology can affect the quality of teaching and learning
process. Therefore, prior to online learning programs are held, teachers need to
be given training. Teachers cannot carry out online teaching and learning
processes at home without adequate facilities and infrastructure at home,
therefore schools need to prepare facilities in the form of laptops and
internet quota.
The teacher does not have the habit of distance teaching because so far the learning system applied is through face to face. Teachers are accustomed to working in schools, interacting with students, while online learning methods require time to adapt and teachers face new changes that indirectly affect the quality of learning outcomes.
School closure within
a long time, causes lack of opportunities for teachers to socialize with their colleagues
so they feel bored. The Pandemic COVID-19 forces teachers to master
technology to be able to carry out their work. Each school provides online
learning tools and prepares technology, trainers for teachers to facilitate and
improve the quality of learning. Another impact is the increased cost of
purchasing internet quota. To do online learning for several months, of course
more quota will be needed and will automatically increase the cost of
purchasing internet quota.
Suggestions
Relevant
institutions should prepare supporting facilities, competencies and training in
advance for students, teachers and parents before the online learning program
is implemented. Without preparation, this will have an impact on the low quality of
teaching and learning outcomes. Communication between teachers and school and
parents should be well established. This means that there are additional costs
that must be paid by teachers, both material and non-material. Teachers'
working hours are unlimited because they have to communicate and coordinate
with students, parents, other teachers and school principals. Not every teacher
is quick to adopt and learn technology, so for teachers who are coordinators,
working hours are not limited to working days. Saturday and Sunday nights are
still morally charged and responsible for preparing teachers who still need
help to carry out teaching from home. Hopefully the COVID-19 pandemic passes
quickly so everything can go on as before.
