Delivery of goods, for example, deals with Customs institutions of both
countries, citizens passing in contact with Immigration institutions, sending
animals requires administrative documents from the Quarantine Center. What
about sending the corpses?
The Shortcut of Bones Delivery
The way that was passed by the corpse bones was the 'shortcut' ("Jalan
Tikus") which was lived in silence on an agreement to understand each other, as
stated by one of the youths, community leader Yohanes Meko (42 years).
'The Shortcut” to deliver the bones of the corpse into the way that is prone to
conflict. This happens because there are often border crossers who take advantage
of situations for other matters such as smuggling goods, seizing pets, and staying
for long periods of time.
According to Yohanes, the 'shortcut' is one of the 'peaceful' ways for large
families both Indonesian citizens and NDTL residents. Not only for the sake of
corpse bones, but also for other family needs such as sickness, mourning the dead,
sending garden produce and other economic activities, family visits, even
homesick roads without having to have permission to pass the National Budget.
Local Wisdom
This mutual understanding was also sought by Yohanes Meko when
accompanying the delivery of corpse bones which would be transferred to Oequsi
region and to Wini region and other regions in Indonesia and NDTL.
According to this young man, every year there are always bones crossed.
"Starting with the ritual of excavating bodies accompanied by communication of
betel nut, animal sacrifices, and prayers. The program continued with bathing,
wrapping it in white cloth, and carried it in a carried position along the way.
Delivery of bones through shortcut, because it cannot be done through the official
PLBN line. This reality occurs every year because after being separated into two
countries, citizens want funeral places to move according to the origins of families
who are still alive, choosing, and facing the future of their citizenship, "(Yohanes
Meko, remote interview November 02 2018).
This young man acknowledged that the officers generally understood when
there were border crossers passing the shortcut with bones in a sling. An
understanding of kinship relations, the similarity of language, traditional house,
history of origins, culture, and important family values is underlined. Thus
the political tragedy that led to the separation of the state does not need to be the
reason for separation of relatives and kinship. There are many things that are
easily resolved according to local wisdom that one language, one traditional house,
one culture even though different countries.
Conclusion
Handling the corpse is closely related to traditional beliefs and religious
beliefs (Catholic) about life after death. Conflicts relating to funeral bodies can be
overcome through understanding the same language identity, traditional house,
and culture, even though different countries.
In handling the funeral of corpse, local wisdom has an identity recognition
function, a unifying tool, direction and build understanding, reduce conflict, and
build relationships of values. (Maria Matildis Banda - Anak Agung Ayu Rai
