Spatial construal of TIME in Indonesian language and co-speech gestures

Funding period : 2018-2022 Active

Abstrak

Collaborators: Poppy Siahaan (University of Cologne, Germany) and Alice Gaby (Monash University, Australia)

Goal: To describe the representation of TIME in terms of SPACE in Indonesian, as evidenced by language, co-speech gestures, and psycholinguistic experiments [under development].

Brief description: << UPDATE: This research has been published open access in Linguistik Indonesia (Rajeg, Siahaan, and Gaby 2022) >> This initial phase of the project begins with (i) corpus-based data of linguistic metaphors in an Indonesian Leipzig Corpus (c15 mill. word-tokens) and (ii) a sample of co-speech gestures of talk show participants (four top Indonesian singers) when they talk about temporal reference (e.g., events progression, events ordering). Early results of this project have been accepted for presentation at the 15th International Cognitive Linguistics Conference (ICLC 15) in Nishinomiya, Japan (6-9 August 2019) (cf. here) (updated abstract).
