Public Perceptions of the Transformation of Architecture in the Car Shrine in Paluang Temple, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency

Abstrak

Shrine for Hindus in Bali is a medium for the realisation of devotion to God as contained in the concept of sacred symbols such as the phallus yoni, holy statues, ornaments that are symbolic of the universe (bhuwana agung). However, the development that occurred was the transformation of the shrine architectural form from the holy form into the profane in the form of a car shrine that occurred at Paluang Temple, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency. This phenomenon of uniqueness, besides being a tourist attraction, but this paradigm is also a question for the people of Bali and outside Bali.

Previous studies related to car shrine architecture in Bali, focused more on the factors that influence changes in architectural appearance. Furthermore, this research will further investigate how the perception of Balinese acceptance of the phenomenon of changing the shape of the car shrine architecture. The results of this study are expected to later contribute to scholarship, namely the extent to which the community is able to accept the transformation of architectural concepts from sacred to profane.

The study was conducted with a qualitative method that is through direct observation of the shrine car object, in-depth interviews with the snow ball method to traditional leaders and the wider community how people's acceptance of the architecture of the shrine car. The results of this study will provide answers to public perceptions of new forms in the holy building area.
