ANALYSIS OF RISK FACTORS FOR ASCARIS SUUM INFECTION AMONG TRADITIONAL PIG FARMERS IN BALI
Funding period : 2023- Deactivate
Abstrak
Parasitic diseases affecting humans and animals have not
received adequate attention in developing countries, including Indonesia, due
to their often asymptomatic nature. One such disease is infection by the
roundworm Ascaris
suum, a zoonotic parasite originating from pigs. Traditional pig
farming practices, characterized by poor hygiene and sanitation, significantly
increase the risk of infection for farmers. The objective of this study
was to analyze the risk factors contributing to A.
suum infection among traditional pig farmers in Bali. A
case-control study was conducted involving pig farmers with positive and
negative A.
suum infection statuses. Risk factor data were collected
using structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed both bivariately and
multivariately to identify significant risk factors. The study
identified two key risk factors influencing A.
suum infection among traditional pig farmers in Bali:
personal hygiene (AOR: 11.178, 95% CI: 1.98–63.096, P<0.01) and ownership of
pigs infected with A.
suum (AOR: 8.653, 95% CI: 1.5–49.599, P<0.05). In
conclusion, A.
suum is a zoonotic agent in Bali, with personal hygiene and
ownership of infected pigs serving as significant risk factors for infection.
