Abstrak

This study aim to evaluate the  extract of Datura matel, L as a potential anaesthetic in mice. The quality of anaesthesia and duration of actions of anaesthesia were evaluated on twenty mice. The observed pharmacological effect of the extract administered orally to twenty mice seperately at dose rate of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 g/kg respectively, showed a graded dose response relationship. The extract at an oral dose of 1 and 2 g/kg induced mild sedation, did not present  analgesia and muscle relaxation. The dose of 3 g/kg induced surgical anaesthesia in mice with good sedation and muscle relaxation, but poor analgesia, loss of anal sphincter tone, and loss of pupillary reflex. This study has shown that the extract of Datura matel, L is relatively safe with good anaesthetic potential  at the oral dose rate of 3g/kg in mice.
