DEVELOPMENT OF "FACE AND BODY MIST ANTIACNE" COSMETIC PRODUCTS FROM CLOVE OIL (Syzygium aromaticum) AND ETHANOLIC SECANG (Caesalpinia sappan L.) EXTRACT

Acne is an abnormal skin condition in the form of infection and inflammation of the oil glands in human skin. Common bacteria that cause acne are Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) which is normally present on the skin and causes the inflammatory phase of acne. The development of cosmetic products for acne using natural ingredients is an alternative therapy to overcome the resistance of P. acnes bacteria to antibiotics. The porposes of this research  is to obtain anti-acne skin care cosmetic products with raw materials that have optimal activity for acne treatment, guaranteed efficacy and product safety through clinical and dermatological trials. The specific purpose of this research is the development of anti-acne products that are easily applied wherever and anytime without disturbing the user's activity and guaranteed efficacy without causing resistance.

Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) and clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum) have been proven to be able to inhibit the growth of P. acnes bacteria, but no one has utilized the combination of the two simplisia as anti-acne. In the first year of research, it was known that brazilein in secang and eugenol in cloves contained in the face and body mist antiacne preparations, the combination of clove oil and ethanol extract of secang wood had the activity of inhibiting the enzymes of endoglycoceramidases, hyaluronate lyase, sialidases and autolysin so that the progression of acne wounds was inhibited. In vitro the combination of clove oil and ethanol extract of secang produced inhibition zones which were almost the same as doxycycline of 19.3 mm. The stability of the combination of the inhibitory and the zone of inhibition that has the same combination of day-0 with day-3 has been tested. The success of the research in Year I will be continued in the Year II research to formulate a "face and body mist antiacne" combination of clove oil and ethanol extract of secang wood; then testing in vitro of formulas that have been made and compared to determine the optimum formula and stability testing of preparations. In the second year, research will get the concentration of a combination of active substances that are effective and efficient as anti-acne. In addition, the second year will test the antioxidant activity of DPPH and trace the molecular mechanism of eugenol in clove oil and brazilein in secang wood in silico which mediates its activity as an antioxidant. In the third years, the study will be continued by testing the effectiveness of the "face and body mist antiacne" combination of clove oil and ethanol extract of sappan wood in vivo on rabbit skin induced by P. acnes bacteria intradermally. In the second year research will get the concentration of a combination of active substances that are effective and efficient as anti-acne. In addition, in the second year a safety test will be carried out according to the requirements of liquid preparations with active ingredients of simplicia / galenic preparations such as the Total Plate Count (ALT) test and the presence of pathogenic microbes.
