PERFORMANCE AND COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION ON PE GOAT AS A BASIC OF SELECTION IN BALI PROVINCE

Abstrak

PE Goat is a goat from a cross between the Etawa Goat and the Kacang Goat. These goats are almost the same size as the etawa goat but are more adaptive to Indonesia's local environment. The results showed that the development of PE goats was not very good. If this continues and in a long time will reduce the performance of these animals. Efforts to improve livestock performance can be done with two factors, namely genetic factors and environmental factors. Efforts to improve genetic factors can be done by carrying out a breeding action called a selection program.
The selection program will be effective if the population of animals to be selected has a characteristic with high phenotypic variation. For the effectiveness of selection, several variables of high economic value such as body weight and body dimensions can be measured and their diversity calculated. If the phenotypic variation is high, then within breed selection will be effective and efficient. Conversely, if the phenotypic variation is low, it needs to be taken into account to bring cattle from outside the population, so that the phenotypic variation of the population increases. The magnitude of the phenotypic vaiation of the population can be measured by calculating the coefficient of variation (CV). The population is more variation if the CV value is> 15%.
The research will be conducted in Tabanan and Jembrana districts as representatives of the Bali Province for 5 months, by measuring the performance and body dimensions of the production characteristics of PE goats in several groups in the area.  The objectives od research are 1). To find out the performance of the production characteristics of the PE goat population in the Province of Bali; 2). To find out the coefficient variation of the characteristics of PE goat production in the province of Bali; 3). Obtaining prospective breedstock and superior PE goats.
Data analysis will be carried out descriptively to get the average body weight and body dimensions of the PE goat and calculate of the coefficient of variation of productivity.
