Effect of Meditation to Depressive Symptoms and Emotion Regulation in Adolescents

Abstrak
The number of cases of adolescents who commit suicide in Bali has generally increased. The occurrence of suicide must be prevented as early as possible. Based on the results of previous studies, depression is one of the psychological disorders associated with the emergence of ideas and suicide attempts. Depression in adolescents if left untreated leads to negative effects including: vulnerability to reappear / recur, affect many aspects of life, and adolescents are more committed to committing suicide than other ages. Symptoms of depression that occur in adolescents include: lack of excitement, changes in sleep needs, changes in body weight, changes in mood, thoughts and suicide attempts. The many demands faced by adolescents make teens vulnerable to depression. Given the importance of psychological health in adolescents, the handling of depression is very important in order to overcome the problem and prevent recurrence. One aspect that plays a role in the dynamics of the emergence of depression in adolescents is emotion regulation. Emotional conditions of adolescents who tend to be unstable, need positive management so that adolescent psychological well-being can be achieved. One effective treatment for dealing with depression and balancing emotions is to carry out meditation. Meditation is useful for balancing and harmonizing elements of the body, mind, emotions, and spirituality. With positive thoughts and emotions, the symptoms of depression can be overcome and emotions can be regulated positively, so it is necessary to know the effect of meditation on depressive symptoms and adolescent emotional regulation.
