‘New Englishes’ for the Tourism workers at Kuta Traditional Village, Bali

Abstrak

New Englishes as an international language has an important role in the world of tourism, namely as one of the most important capital for workers in the field of tourism, without any exception for tourism workers who are classified as lower class such as merchants, masseurs, parking attendants, shop assistants or kiosks, etc. Initial observations indicate that in carrying out his profession, these tourism workers generally use New Englishes.  Because of being less fluent in communicating with foreign tourists so both sides often seem or feel disappointed.
                New Englishes used by tourism workers have been 'naturalized' by adopting some features of local languages, especially Balinese, such as sounds, intonation patterns, sentence structures,
words, and expressions. This article discusses the New Englishes or often called 'Balinese English' which has been used by tourism workers at Desa Adat Kuta, Bali (customary village) to improve their welfare.
