Funding period : 2018- Active
Abstrak
Communities in the border region of Indonesia - Timor Leste generally have
kinship relations from generation to generation. However, conflicts often occur
over land, territorial boundary disputes, rights to communal land, seizure of burial
land, and social conflicts related to kinship and life cycles. This does not need to
happen if awareness of the origin, history, and traditions of identity is present.
Some important questions that need to be answered about identity awareness
can be formulated: 1) how is the nature of oral tradition as local wisdom ?; 2) how
is the function and value of the Timorese oral tradition. The goal is to get
comprehensive data on the nature, function, and value of the Timorese oral
tradition that applies in the border area. The methods and theories used are field
research methods through focus group discussions (FGD), workshops, and
interviews; and oral tradition theory.
The result is that oral tradition has strategic and political functions and values
as follows. Dawan Language: 1) facilitate communication and openness between
citizens; 2) easier to overcome various conflicts because of mutual understanding;
3) strengthen relations and kinship because various rituals are carried out in the
same language. Traditional houses and rituals related to them: 1) identity
reinforcement symbols; 2) unifying symbol; and 3) symbols of pride of origin.
History and customary law: 1) function and value of conciliation; 2) family-based
functions and values of reconciliation and arbitration, kinship relations, traditional
houses, ethnic groups, languages and cultures; 3) functions and values of local
diplomacy based on customary law. These functions and values are believed
to strengthen cultural relations between the two countries.
