Abstrak

Wear resistance of the surface of the medium carbon steel was improved through the process of NiCr coating deposited on medium carbon steel by process of powder flame spray coating. Wear test was conducted in pin-on-flat test, wear and its mechanism was then investigated. The test results show the wear rate of NiCr coating layer is very small which is about thirty times smaller than the wear rate of the medium carbon steel. The wear mechanism of NiCr coating layer was identified as very small particles removed from the surface without introducing plastic deformation. However, the wear mechanism of the medium carbon steel is indicated with a large plastic deformation of material at the surface before its failed and detached from the surface as the wear debris. The adhesion of NiCr coating layer on the substrate looks very good, this is indicated by the absence of NiCr coating layers that was peeled off the surface of the substrate under the repetitive friction load.
