Abstrak

Data shows that since 1930 many residents of Banjar Umacandi of Buduk Village, in Badung Regency, Bali Province, have converted from Hinduism into Christianit. This happens for various reasons including health, economic, educational and environmental stimulus. This shift has entailed modifications in the layout of ones' houses. Some buildings which existed when they believe in Hinduism are no longer retained once it's they decide to convert into Christianity. The objective of this study is to develop a database that records all this changes. It implements a qualitative-phenomenology research method, focusing on the description of both the original and current setting of each chosen case (house). Data collection is carried out by conducting field observations, documentations and interview. Data is presented in the form of tables, graphs, maps and images. Study results show the implementation of the 'sanga mandala' conception that guides spatial formation of a Balinese traditional house is no longer observable in houses of the converts. While the sacred zone and the bale adat, the two fundamental structural elements of a Balinese traditional home, are omitted from the converted homes, the angkul-angkul remains conserved. The richness of these conversions will be further detailed in the following text. Keywords: religious conversion, building layout, Balinese traditional houses
