Abstrak

Padang Galak Beach is one of many open public spaces, located at Kesiman Petilan Village of Denpasar- Bali. It accommodates various activities including those dedicated to ritual, recreational, and economic purposes. The use of this public space involves many parties and interests, in which conflicts often and inevitably take place, especially when two or more interest groups come with neither an agreement nor a concerted action. This article examines the typology of conflicts encountered in this area and values associated with the occurrence of these conflicts. Discussion within is supported by data collected through interviews, physical observations, and spatial analysis. Study results show that the encountered conflicts dominantly occur due to the persistent interests of the Balinese to maintain their traditions, culture, and values trying to block the potentially impairing influences brought in by the economic agendas promoted by other groups of interests. Each of these interests possesses certain cultural values that likely differ from one to another and potentially cause conflict when a mutual consensus cannot be reached for all different reasons.
