Abstrak
Rapid urban growth nowadays has created great changes in urban forms. In the post industrial era, with the increase of population, urbanization has expanded rapidly. Land is becoming more scarce and expensive for people who want to live in the city. Furthermore, this rapid growth has created more problems than just scarcity of land, not only for the people such as degradation of quality of life but also for the environment. Air pollution, water pollution and land pollution now is becoming very serious issues for the world, and we have to do something to reduce this effect on people and the environment. Other things to consider are the excessive use of natural resources caused by the increase number of people which is making the problem even worst. Garden city concept which was introduced by Howard in the last century in Europe could be thought of as offering a solution to this problem, with its aim of creating harmony between people and nature. This concept of Garden City provides a model of an ideal city form. This essay will discuss about the concept of garden city and will consider whether this concept is suitable to aid the sustainability of settlement in the provide argument whether this concept is suitable or not with the sustainability of settlement for the 21st century, both for developed and developing countries. Key words: garden city, sustainability.
