Congo Red (CR) is an anionic diazo dye, sensitive to acids, and toxic. The CR dye adsorption using cellulose from sago frond was carried out in this study. Cellulose sago frond was isolated by delignification and bleaching process. The adsorption was carried out in batches by observing the effect of various parameters such as the initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH solution and temperature on adsorption capacity and removal percentage. Adsorption characteristics were analyzed using isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic adsorption models. The results showed that cellulose sago frond had a rough surface with a microspore structure. The adsorption process showed that the initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH solution and temperature affect the capacity and removal percentage. Increasing the initial dye concentration and temperature caused an increase in adsorption capacity. Meanwhile, an increase in the adsorbent dosage and pH solution caused a decrease in adsorbent capacity. Equilibrium adsorption data followed Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order was the best kinetic model to describe the adsorption kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption occurred spontaneously.
