Abstrak

Background: The increasing of age causes decrease of the sleep period. Sleep disorders and cognitive function complaints are frequently reported in the elderly. The prevalence of sleep disorders and impairment of cognitive function in the elderly is high (about 67% and 17-34%), but there are only a few of study about cognitive function in elderly who experience sleep disturbances in Indonesia. Aim: to determine the differences of cognitive function in elderly with good and bad sleep quality. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional studies. All elderly who come to the Posyandu will be examined with The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess the quality of sleep. To know the cognitive function, we run Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the presence of depression using The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). All data will be analyzed to obtain the proportion of sleep disorders in the elderly and to determine the difference cognitive impairment using chi square test. Results: This research included a total 30 elderly (mean age 67,46 ± 4,4 years) consist of most common women (60%). Proportion of poor sleep is aproximately 53 % and cognitive impairment is 56,7%. Cognitive impairment happened in 35,7% elderly with good sleep quality and 75% in the group with poor sleep quality. Significantly different variable of cognitive impairment is variable coexisting illness and drug or substances consumption. Discussion:There are a significantly different cognitive impairment in elderly based on quality of sleep, coexisting illness and drug or substances used.
