CHARACTERISTICS OF ETHAMBUTOL OPTIC NEUROPATHY ON TUBERCULOSIS TREATMENT IN SANGLAH HOSPITAL DENPASAR

Abstrak

ABSTRACT Background: Enforcement of ethambutol toxic optic neuropathy diagnosis uses visual examination, (relative afferent pupillary defect) RAPD, contrast sensitivity, colour vision, visual field, and patient complaints that are subjective so that an objective investigation is needed using visual evoked potential (VEP). Method: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study in 30 pulmonary tuberculosis patients and were therefore referred to the pulmonology clinic of Public General Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, from May 13 to August 13, 2018, based on medical record data. This study aims to determine the characteristics of patients with ethambutol toxic optic neuropathy at the pulmonology clinic of Public General Sanglah Hospital Denpasar. Results: We reported 30 patients, 19 were male and 11 female, mean age 33 years, visual acuity disorder and red-green dyschromatopsia seven people, and optic nerve lesions five people. Impaired visual acuity, colour dyschromatopsia, and VEP abnormalities found in patients with ethambutol treatment for five months. Conclusions: Impaired visual acuity, colour dyschromatopsia, and optic nerve (ON) lesion were obtained five months of treatments.
