Abstrak

Introduction: Physiologically, the level of melatonin will decrease with the increasing of age thus creating impaired quality of sleep among elderly. Impaired quality of sleep thought to be associated with impaired cognitive function but research on the relationship between the those two in Indonesia are rarely reported. Aims: To determine the correlation of poor sleep quality and cognitive impairment in the elderly. Methods: This is a cross sectional study using consecutive sampling method. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the quality of sleep and Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Indonesia (MoCA-Ina) to assess cognitive impairment. Results: 52 people with the proportion of 65.4% of woman were included in the study. The mean age was 67.77±4.68 years old with level of education mostly elementary school (38.5%). More women had poor sleep quality (78.8%) and cognitive impairment (76.9%). The mean PSQI score of subject and mean MoCA-Ina score were 11.5±5.086 and 23.06±2.052 respectively. There was a weak correlation between poor sleep quality and impaired cognitive function which significant with statistical analysis. Discussion: Poor sleep quality correlated with cognitive impairment in the elderly.
