Abstrak

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a potential blinding complication of head or orbital trauma. The injury impact may generate a shock wave which lead to optic nerve avulsion or indirect TON. Theraphy for TON remains controversial. The objective of this research is focus on characteristic and difference improvement of visual acuity between TON patient treated by high-dose corticosteroid and observation in Sanglah general hospital Denpasar. This research is a descriptive study using retrospective data of 41 patients with TON attending Sanglah General Hospital Denpasar, from January 2013 until December 2015. The data were analyzed descriptively, shown as frequency and percentage. Improvement of visual acuity were analyzed by chi-square test. Fourthy-one patients were included, 13 patiens received high dose corticosteroid and 28 patients received observation. In corticosteroid group, 84.6% were males, number of patients who were less than 20 years old is the highest (46.2%), mayority came from Denpasar (53.8%), most of the eyes had poor vision on presentation (6/60-NLP) with majority of patients (83%) presented with maxillofacial trauma, head injury with cranial base fracture. In clinical observation group, 78.6% were males, number of patients who were less than 20 years old is the highest (50%), mayority came from Denpasar (23.1%), most of the eyes had poor vision on presentation (6/60-NLP), majority of patients (23.1%) had head injury and maxillofacial trauma. This study concluded that there is no statistically significant difference in improvement of visual acuity ? 2 line between patients treated by high-dose corticosteroid and observation.
