Abstrak
ABSTRACT Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease in the periodontal tissues, caused by collagen fibers damage and alveolar bone, forming a pocket and gingival recession. This condition was caused by matrix metalloprotein damage ddue to increasing of collagenase level. Terpinen – 4 – ol type is an active ingredient of Tea Tree Oil as an antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti inflammation, and have not yet used commercially to treat periodontitis. The aims of research was to determine the ability scaling and Terpinen – 4 – ol type 1% (TTO) to decrease collagenase level compare to scaling and Chlorhexidine Digluconate 0,12% (CD) on chronic periodontitis. This study was conducted using Randomized Pre-post Test Control Group Design on 30 patients suffer from chronic periodontitis related calculus. The subjects were grouped into Intervention Group 1 (IG1) and Interventian Group 2 (IG2). IG1 was got scalling and CD while IG2 got scalling and TTO. The average decreased of colagenase level differentiation between two groups after intervention was compared and analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. The result showed that the average collagenase level on both groups was decreased. The average collagenase level on IG1 before treatment was 0.946 +0.649 ng / mL and after treatment decreased into 0.874 +0.242 ng / mL. Collagenase level on IG2 before treatment was 1.334 +0.655 ng / mL and after treatment were 0.649 +0.171 ng / mL. Statistic test was showed that average collagenase level after intervention was decreased significantly between IG 1 and IG 2 (p<0,05). The result showed that TTO has more effect to decease colanegase level compare to CD. TTO has an active ingredient that act as antiseptic, anticakterial and actiinflamation. It was concluded that the scaling and Terpinen - 4 - ol type 1 % proven to reduce collagenaselevel more than scaling and 0.12 % Chlorhexidine Digluconate on periodontitis patients related calculus. It suggested to use TTO as an altertnative medicine in chronic periodeotitis related calculus.
