International Symposium on Waterside City —Environmental History Research Toward Future
Invitation of International Symposium on Waterside City—Environmental History Research Toward FutureDear
Professor I Nyoman Sudiarta,Egypt
is the gift of the Nile and the Yellow River is the Mother River of China. The
FourGreat
Ancient Civilizations are nourished and infiltrated by the great rivers. In
traditional society,the
distribution of water systems is an important geographical factor and a vital
resource forproduction
and living. It is not only a significant economic and social endowment in
developmentof
a country and region, but also gestates Karl Wittfogel’s theory of water
control society. In theindustrial
age, the technological revolution greatly changed the economic landscape and
sociallocation,
but in many cases, the rise and fall of civilizations and cities were still
related to water:London
and its relationship to the Thames in British history, the struggles for water
rights in thedevelopment
of western cities in the United States, the rise and decline of canal culture
in Chinesehistory
the current Xiong’an new district near Baiyangdian, the Zhengding new district
createdalong
the Hutuo River. All these serve as frequent reminders that human beings must
learn toharmoniously
deal with the relationship among water resources, environmental changes andeconomic
development in the process of modernization and urbanization. The
China Environmental History Research Center of Hebei Normal University will
